Cowell is keeping silent on X Factor vs Strictly battle

It's not Saturday night television until someone mentions ratings, but it looks like that person isn't about to be X Factor judge Simon Cowell.

In recent years, The X Factor has been slowly falling behind in the ratings battles when airing in direct competition with BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing.

But, considering this year is Strictly's first without head judge Len Goodman, and Simon has made no secret of the fact he's introducing a number of changes to The X Factor to try and hold onto his audience, could this be the year the singing show pulls back?

Well, to be honest, probably not. But that's fine anyway, because Simon says he's stopped putting too much stock in the TV numbers game.

"I've learnt to keep my mouth shut about that," he said (via The Sun). "We can't compete with their overall audience because they're much older. What's important for us is to keep the young audience interested in the show."

And, of course, it's important to find the next winner too.

"I've seen a couple of contestants this year who are really, really good," Simon added. "You're always hoping to find the next star and that's what I'm focusing on now."

Among the changes being introduced by Cowell this year are fewer live shows, the removal of the not-so-random jukebox that picked the next week's theme, and a renewed focus on audition acts being able to sing an original song, if they choose to do so.

And when it comes to explaining why he's made these changes, Simon added that it's all about trying not to make the same show every year.

"I think if you just make the same show each year it becomes boring and predictable," he said. "So you try and make changes for the better, not everything works but some ideas we've got for the live shows are going to be good."

The X Factor returns this Saturday night (September 2) and Sunday (September 3), both nights at 8pm on ITV. Watch a teaser below:
